BIOCITIES |
 |
|
Cities are made of thin webs which occasionally reveal their essence: textures of a life flowing also underneath or inside concrete geometries. Carlo D’Orta explores the cities' surface, its glare and combined reflections. He draws on the concept of a web which gets wider and provides the real world with a new skin. Architectural geometries and the points connecting interior and exterior spaces are actually the DNA of a modern vertical city, as in a quest for an impossible integration with the environment. In D'Orta's photographs the buildings look light and aerial. They lose their nature of [...] |

VIBRATIONS |
 |
|
The photographic
study entitled "Vibrations" was conceived as a whole
in 2009. It focuses on the reflections produced by ground-based
shop windows and, besides, the reflections produced upwards by
skyscrapers, one reflecting into the other like modern Adonis.
These reflections create a parallel world of magic shapes –
either anthropomorphic or abstract – , deception, imagination
and sudden light effects which appear and disappear as we walk
further. Although seemingly virtual, this world actually exists:
most of the times, we slide through it absentmindedly. But if
we just stop for a while, we [...] |

TRANSLATION |

Warm colour tones
blend joyfully with their neat contrasts, as in an ecstatic thrill.
Surfaces quiver as if the photographer was focusing on jelly-like
blobs. The lines separate from the objects and give rise to something
new…an amazingly poetic flavour of architecture stems from
his shots. The photographer manages to change the view of the
object by using targeted angles. D’Orta delivers a new perspective
by working on composition, colours, contrasts and light. Reflections,
distortion effects, static-featured twists, a growing number of
graphic items and, most importantly, emphasis on colours: [...] |

SURREALIST
LANDSCAPES |
 |
|
Photographing the
Landscape from a metaphysical and surrealist perspective: I draw
on the lesson of Antoni Gaudì and Salvador Dalì, combining
Niki de Saint Phalle's charming visions and the inclined or reflecting
planes associated with Francis Bacon and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
Such is the aim of the project I have been working on in the last
couple of months. Here are a few ideas.
The project entitled “Surrealist landscapes” stems from the Italian
landscapes and towns. It conveys that, as Italians, we go back
to our birthplaces, that is places filled with classical culture
and art [...] |

BERLIN |
 |
|
I happened to be
in Berlin a couple of times for business-related reasons. Too
short a time.
In January 2010, I finally managed to stay there longer and get
a feel of the city. I chose to stay close to Potsdamer Platz,
as I wanted to start my tour from the metaphoric scar linking
the two cities, once mirroring each other — like a separated
couple living together — from 1961 to 1989. While walking
slowly down the boulevards and the streets covered with snow,
I'd try to plunge into the soul of this city. [...] |

PAINTING |
 |
|
Photography is my
means of artistic expression. Painting is nevertheless the means
and the place for further chromatic and conceptual research; such
reaserch is destined, sometimes rationally sometimes unconsciously,
to be reflected in my photographic vision. I use oil and watercolour
techniques in works, both figurative and abstract, whose common
feature is the exploration of feelings in the metropolitan context. |
